The Business Law Section Mission

Who and what we are about

‍The Business Law Section provides tools to help business lawyers meet the challenges of a business law practice.  It also provides opportunities for business lawyers to shape the statutes, rules, regulations, and interpretations under which they practice law.  And, it provides an opportunity to influence professional consensus organizations which affect their practices.  Our committees work with the Texas legislature to suggest updates to the Texas Business Organizations Code and the Texas version of the UCC. We provide commentary on proposals by administrative agencies like the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Texas Securities Board. We work on guidance for lawyers issuing legal opinions on transactions that have a Texas nexus.

I urge you to click on the “Member Benefits” and "Resource Centers" on the navigation bar at the top of this website to explore all of the content we gather here on behalf of the Section. Check out the "News" tab for alerts on business law related matters. Look to "Events" for our webinars and gatherings with other Sections of the Bar and local bar associations.

We have new initiatives to monitor Texas case law for cases that are of particular import to business lawyers -- both litigators and transactional attorneys -- especially since the advent of the Texas Business Courts which start operations in September 2024.

We are launching several series of 1 hour accredited CLE webinars for members, the first of which will be three hours on business law ethics issues. Business lawyers can take these webinars, fulfill their entire ethics requirements for the current MCLE year and learn something specifically relevant to their practices. In the offing is a series of CLE webinars on drafting business documents and particular clauses within them.

Law students and lawyers new to the practice of business law can apply for our Business Law Fellows program. We set out a defined one-year project for each Fellow to work on with an experienced Section member to add to the business law knowledge base on our website. It is a great way for new lawyers to learn a new area of business law practice.

Come join this wise network of individuals who will hopefully become trusted to help you filter information, expose blind spots and make us all better business lawyers.
